Moments of Art and Laughter at the Museum of Humor and SatireMoments of Art and Laughter at the Museum of Humor and Satire

Despite a reduced team, the meeting on November 14, 2023 with our friends from the Disability Club blended art and laughter into an exciting experience. The event began with the whimsically humorous poems by Temenuga Tsoneva and continued with the idea of integrating them into the exhibition.

“Exploring the works from the Painting Fund, we were impressed by the variety of techniques and expressiveness—from paintings by Naum Hadzhigenov, Milka Peykova, Atanas Vasilev, Vulchan Petrov to Radi Nedelchev. Each artwork told its story, sparking an even stronger desire for collaboration in us,” shared one of the participants in the community curation process.

Thus, another meeting passed, leaving not only admiration for art in the hearts of the participants but also anticipation for more such exciting moments in the future.

The selection is nearing its completion, but many tasks still lie ahead before the exhibition opens.

The meeting began with fresh memories from the previous discussion. Participants then took a stroll through the museum’s exhibition halls, sharing memories of events within it and discussing changes over the past years. Dimka Koleva, responsible for the largest cartoon collection in Bulgaria, joined this meeting. Together, they explored works from the museum’s cartoon collection, rich in pieces covering various themes. Works by artists such as Ilia Beshkov, Todor Tsonev, and Halit Kurtulmuş-Aytoslu attracted particular attention and comments from our friends and partners from the Disability Club.

The project continues successfully, enriching discussions and mutual understanding among the different communities in Gabrovo.

Training on Community Curation with Norwegian Experts and a Meeting at the Disability ClubTraining on Community Curation with Norwegian Experts and a Meeting at the Disability Club

On October 3, 2023, Tuesday, the second training on Community Curation took place with the participation of experts from the Norwegian University for Green Development. Rhys Evans and Johan Barstad, instructors from the partnering organization, led the event, discussing the distinctive features and challenges of Community Curation. The focus of the second training was on the topic of innovations in working with cultural heritage through community engagement and development. This seminar is a crucial stage in preparation for the upcoming exhibition titled “Satire through the Eyes of Gabrovians.”

A day later, Rhys Evans and Johan Barstad, along with staff from the Museum of Humor and Satire, visited the Disability Club, marking the most touching moment of all their visits to Bulgaria so far.

The Norwegian experts shared their experiences and best practices, enriching practical knowledge about working with diverse communities. An interesting insight was the sharing of the model where in Norway, each community has its representative – a volunteer who represents and advocates for its interests when working with institutions.

“Community Curation” in Gabrovo: Satire through the Eyes of Gabrovians“Community Curation” in Gabrovo: Satire through the Eyes of Gabrovians

In the second half of September, the inspiring and unusual initiative of “Community Curation” began at the Museum of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo. Carried out under the project “The Address of Satire,” the activity aims to unite the ideas of Gabrovians with different life stories and perspectives to create a temporary exhibition reflecting the diverse humor and satire in this creative and sharp-witted town.

The first two meetings, held on September 19 and 26, marked the beginning of collaboration with representatives of the local Disability Club. The primary goal of community curation is, through mobilization, participation, and empowerment of specific communities, to collaboratively create a new temporary exhibition with the museum team. This exhibition will showcase their understanding of the role of satire as a moral corrective in society and authority.

The community of people with disabilities and retirees will attempt to demonstrate that humor and satire in the town are not just museum exhibits but are embodied in the witty and self-ironic character of Gabrovians.

Participants engaged in discussions on topics such as upbringing, false self-esteem, and their connection to recent car incidents in Bulgaria. They commented on and analyzed works provided by the Museum’s collection, focusing their attention on the artistic creations of Eduardo Minyos Bax, Radi Nedelchev, Keazim Isinov, and others.

Press Conference on the Progress of the “The Address of Satire” ProjectPress Conference on the Progress of the “The Address of Satire” Project

On August 4th at 10:30 a.m., the team of the Museum of Humor and Satire organized a press conference on the progress of Project No. BGCULTURE-1.001-0039, titled “The Address of Satire,” implemented with financial support from the Cultural Entrepreneurship, Heritage, and Cooperation Program of the EEA Grants 2014-2021. The conference took place in the Hall of Giraffes in the Museum, and representatives from local and national media responded to the invitation.

The project was presented by Nela Rachevits, deputy director for administrative activities at the Museum and project leader.

“The museum will have four revitalized spaces on the third floor, two exhibition halls, a foyer will be renovated, and a new space for the library will be created, equipped with technology, furniture, and shelves for storage, and reading areas. The project is named ‘The Address of Satire’ and will reveal the hidden treasures of the museum. Its duration is 22 months, and we are currently on schedule. The creation and presentation of new exhibitions involve the use of innovative technologies and tools that provide a new perspective on cultural heritage, interactivity, and engagement of various social, cultural, and ethnic groups and communities,” Rachevits announced.

In the midst of construction and renovation activities, one of the highlights of the presentation was that the library collection, exceeding 29,000 units thematically related to humor and satire, comedy, folklore, and the humor of peoples, will become accessible to citizens, scholars, and researchers in the new museum library on the third floor.

The role of the partnering organization, the Norwegian University College for Green Development, was not overlooked, and its representatives are developing an innovative methodology for creating exhibitions through community curation. Training sessions are being organized for specialists from the Museum and employees of other cultural institutions to enhance their competence and improve the quality management of cultural heritage. For the first time in Bulgaria, the See One, Do One, Teach One methodology of the Norwegian partner is expected to be introduced, enabling the creation of exhibitions through the participation and empowerment of specific communities, who, together with the Museum team, will convey their understanding of the role of satire as a moral corrective to society and authority.

At the end of the press conference, the two new members of the Museum team engaged in the project were introduced: Bogdana Dencheva – events/museum educator with a focus on literature and book collection, and Ralitsa Minkova – Public Relations expert, focusing on online audience development and creating online content.

After the successful completion of the selection procedure for the contractor of the renovation activities aimed at revitalizing the spaces in the Museum of Humor and Satire, this significant cultural institution in the city is now undergoing a new development. The procedure was conducted through a public procurement process in accordance with the Public Procurement Act, involving a lengthy evaluation and selection process.

The initiative to revitalize the Museum of Humor and Satire is of utmost importance for enriching the cultural landscape in the region and preserving the national cultural heritage. Following the public procurement process with two separate lots, the Museum is ready to open up new perspectives for its visitors.

After a thorough evaluation of the received offers, the Public Procurement Commission decided to terminate the initial procedure, providing a well-founded argument that protecting public interest requires optimization of market proposals. This approach encouraged competition, ultimately leading to the selection of the best possible offer.

The process of selecting a new contractor commenced in April 2023 and concluded successfully after an evaluation by the Evaluation Commission in June of the same year. The outcome was the signing of a contract for the execution of the public procurement, titled “Execution of Construction Works for the Revitalization of Spaces in the Museum ‘House of Humor and Satire,'” with a completion deadline set for November 29, 2023.

Four companies participated in the second procedure for the selection of the contractor, and the selection was made based on strict criteria ensuring the highest quality of execution. The company that scored the highest points successfully won the contract.

With the leadership team of the Museum of Humor and Satire and the selected contractor, we are certain that the renovation activities will rejuvenate the museum spaces and create a renewed and exciting environment for visitors.

We eagerly anticipate seeing the results of this incredible opportunity to enrich the cultural life in the region and provide a better and more interesting experience for all those who choose to visit the Museum of Humor and Satire.
