“Digitalize This” with NOESIS: from Project Partnership to Friendship“Digitalize This” with NOESIS: from Project Partnership to Friendship

In implementation of the project “Creation of Space, Plan and Model for Digitizatаlization of Cultural Exhibits and Archive” of the Museum of Humor and Satire, Gabrovo, financed by the National Culture Fund under the Program for Restoration and Development of State, Regional and Municipal Cultural Institutes, three of our museum experts, together with the contracted creator of the planned artistic production, visited the cultural institution NOESIS in Thessaloniki, Greece in order to exchange experience on the subject of content digitization.

NOESIS is a science and technology center located in the Thermi area of Thessaloniki. The museum has been actively involved in the preservation of the Greek technological heritage for more than 20 years. Parallel to the technological exhibitions, NOESIS has various types of unique high-class facilities such as an impressive 360° dome planetarium, 3D simulation rooms and a cosmotheater for projecting films and educational programs on the largest screen in all of Greece, with the respectable 23 meters in length and 17 meters high.

Part of the project management team that participated in the visit from May 19, 2024 to May 23, 2024 included Bogdana Dencheva (Museum Pedagogue), Margarita Dorovska (Curator), Petyo Yordanov (Head of Tech Department), as well as Anton Ivanov (Graphic Designer and contractor for the creative activities within the project). The main part of the program took place on May 21st and 22nd, when the NOESIS specialists presented their organization, goals, team, equipment, approach and practice in planning and implementing the process of digitization of cultural exhibits, including the online platforms they work with, as well as the software and standards they use when digitizing archives.

Prior to their visit at NOESIS, on May 20, 2024, the MHS team visited 2 more specialized cultural institutions in Thessaloniki in order to observe other types of good practices: the Olympic Museum and the Museum of Cinema and its library, with which the foundations of a future partnership on the future of specialized books were also laid.

During their time at NOESIS, the MHS team had the opportunity to ask questions about the planning, organization, presentation and visitor awareness of all the current exhibitions, some of which on the themes of vintage cars, artificial intelligence, technologies in Ancient Greece. Part of the engaging expositions were the eco zoo without animals (yes, it’s possible!) as well as the 3D simulation of a rollercoaster up and down the Great Wall of China, which NOESIS offers to its visitors of all ages and which we, as guardians of laughter, whole-heartedly recommend to our fellow citizens traveling to Greece for their traditional summer vacation this year.

The MHS employees were accompanied and guided on the subject of digitization by the incredible hosts Mrs. Olympia Ralli, Expert “Recording and Documentation of Exhibits”, Mr. Kostas Tanis, Director “Exhibitions and Operations” and Mr. Evangelos Aftonidis, Director “Financial and Administrative Services”. The NOESIS team donated a Greek comic book to the MHS museum library, and the two teams started talks about a future joint exhibition with works from the MHS fund on the theme of new technologies.

We express gratitude to our NOESIS partners – for their time and invaluable advice. We will forever remember their smiles, hospitality, and their key role in inspiring new motivation and strength in the final phase of our project.

We cannot wait to welcome them in Gabrovo as soon as possible!

The film traces the art of dance-theatre with fire in Bulgaria – an interesting and still unpopular artistic format, defined as dance, performance, theatre with fire, circus art, juggling, or “flow arts”. Following in the footsteps of fire performers in our country, the author of Born of Fire and the film crew try to answer the question of what is the impact and almost hypnotic effect of this art on the audience.

We show breathtaking dance footage and performances, focusing on different styles and aesthetics of work, and the inspirations and excitement of the people behind them.

The path taken is unique to each one,” the filmmaker told BNR. In her documentary, she collects the artists’ stories in a series of candid interviews and builds a different, artistic and multi-layered world, which is presented through the visually stunning footage of cinematographer Rumen Vassilev and the memorable music of composer Klimen Dichev. The Address of Satire Project ResultsThe Address of Satire Project Results

Deputy Director Nela Racheviz’s words on the project results and value

Thanks to the funding of the Program “Cultural Entrepreneurship, Heritage and Cooperation”, the Museum was able to complete an important stage of the process of its renovation and modernization. At the end of this project, among the most valuable gains for the Museum, I would point out the confidence that our team can develop and manage relatively large-scale projects – knowledge and skills that we will develop in the years to come.

The third floor of the museum was renovated, including the exhibition halls, the lobby, and the new library. Machinery, equipment, and furniture were delivered. We started working with software for managing and presenting the art collections and library software. Two exhibitions were created, one of them featuring a mobile application. We developed strategic guidelines for the development of the museum library and entrepreneurial ideas for cultural products and services. We developed a marketing plan, an educational program, and a navigation system to help visitors find their way around the museum.

An important upgrade of the capacity of the museum staff in the digitization of works of visual art has been carried out.

Under the guidance of our partner, the Norwegian University College for Green Development, we combined training with the practical application of new approaches in working with audiences. We have acquired knowledge and skills to support the artistic endeavors of disadvantaged communities and groups.

We are convinced of the significant “added value” of cooperation with various civic groups and will continue to spread the model supporting the connection of Bulgarian museums and galleries with new audiences, new ambassadors, and new topics and interpretations addressed to society. A process based on dialogue and shared creative effort that can make the professional work and achievements of museums more approachable and understandable to usually disinterested audiences, as well as give art critics access to better stories and different perspectives.

Opening of the exhibition “Satire and Propaganda” in the cartoons from the Gabrovo Biennial 1973 – 1989Opening of the exhibition “Satire and Propaganda” in the cartoons from the Gabrovo Biennial 1973 – 1989

16 May, 5:00 p.m., Hall 6

The new permanent exhibition “Satire and Propaganda” traces the period of creation of the Museum’s collection in the context of the new rules in (and uses of) satire during the establishment of the communist regime in our country. Particular attention is paid to how the emergence of the House of Humor and Satire changed and developed the field of cartoons and satire in the country.

The exhibition presents a study of the cartoons that participated in the International Biennial of Humor and Satire, organized by the House of Humor and Satire from its creation in 1973 until the end of the totalitarian period in 1989. Its aim is to assess the possibility of satire in a society in which the freedom of expression is limited, and the possibility of criticism is locked in the norm of “small justice” – individual phenomena and mistakes of the bureaucracy can be condemned to a certain, low level of power, without specifically naming and indicating party leaders, often using the so-called called “Aesopian language”. The organizers of the Biennial are extremely honest, choosing to name the Grand Prize the “Golden Aesop”. The other use of satire in cartoons, where it was directed outwards at international politics and the ideological enemy, was on the contrary quite specific, with clear depictions of political figures such as Margaret Thatcher, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger. Truthful or not, in a heavily muted and controlled information environment, these cartoons became a propaganda tool – a practice already well worked out on the pages of the newspapers Papagal (Parrot) and Starshel (Hornet) since the establishment of the new government.

In order to illustrate the spirit of the times and the limits of freedom, three events outside the Biennial are also presented in the exhibition:

  • the “Hot Peppers” case with the book of epigrams, selected and titled by Radoy Ralin and illustrated by Boris Dimovski;
  • the arrest of Todor Tsonev because of caricatures of Todor Zhivkov and other party leaders found in his studio;
  • the cartoon “Haidushko Horo” by Georgi Chaushov, published on the pages of the Starshel newspaper in November 1989.

Several key themes stand out in the considered volume of biennial cartoons: wars and conflicts, economic crises, criticism of Western society, apartheid, religion, ecology, on the one hand globally and on the other, domestically – the life of the little man, the bureaucracy , the search for meaning, domestic adversity, power dynamics in the home.

Visitors have the opportunity to engage in the exhibition through an interactive application with two modules – self-irony and re-cartoon. In the first, the viewers can put their own image in the selected cartoon, and in the second they can remix attributes from different cartoons, creating their own one.

The new library of the Museum of Humor and SatireThe new library of the Museum of Humor and Satire

The museum has been collecting its fund since its inception in order to make it available to the staff, the artists and to scholars researching humor and satire.

The collection contains nearly 30,000 items dating from the late 18th century to the present day. In parallel with gathering anything important and curious from the Bulgarian literature and art within the funny genre, the international life of the Museum strongly characterizes the collection: from Egypt to Costa Rica, through Estonia to Canada, we are the custodians of printed treasures that we can confidently claim cannot be found anywhere else in Bulgaria (it remains to be seen if this claim will be extended to the Balkans, Europe and the world)!

Opening: 16 May, 16:00, Floor 3

At the official opening of the new space, visitors to the Museum will be able to explore the modernized premises on Floor 3, feel the atmosphere in the reading room, where a small part of most of the groups in the fund are currently arranged on the shelves, including books and periodicals in over 20 languages on the subject of caricature, ethnography, painting, photography, as well as short poetic forms, intriguing albums plus the Museum’s own editions and catalogs adored for generations. Due to the huge volume of the fund, the process is taking place in stages, and in the upcoming months the Library will take the necessary steps to prepare for its work with external audiences.

During the launch presentation, guests will hear not only the next steps of the Library’s detailed development strategy, but also be able to give feedback and ideas about the process of creating a unique place for community events.

We await you with excitement and a smile – which is always with us even when we cannot find our reading glasses in a hurry!

Take a sneak peek at the new Library space, briefly presented by our Events Expert and Museum Educator, focused on Literature and Book Collection.

The Project:
The project “The Address of Satire – Creating an Exhibition from the Collection of the Museum House of Humor and Satire – Gabrovo“, is filed by the Program “Cultural Entrepreneurship, Heritage, and Cooperation” financed by the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Areа.
With the help of the funds from the project, in 2023, the process of reconstructing and relocating the Library began – the books were first moved from the then storage facilities on Floor 4 to a temporary warehouse. After purchasing library software, their step-by-step extraction, sorting and entering into the system started, including a description, which in the future will connect the processing of books to the borrowing by readers, as well as the visualization of the fund in an electronic catalog. The goal is to keep up with the new possibilities for creating a digital archive as well as not to limit the availability in the Library lists geographically only to Gabrovo.
