Significant participation of the Museum of Humor and Satire – Gabrovo in the Jubilee exhibition on the occasion of 120 years since the birth of Stoyan Venev, organized by “Vladimir Dimitrov – the Master” art gallery in KyustendilSignificant participation of the Museum of Humor and Satire – Gabrovo in the Jubilee exhibition on the occasion of 120 years since the birth of Stoyan Venev, organized by “Vladimir Dimitrov – the Master” art gallery in Kyustendil

The opening in Kyustendil is on September 20th at 18:00, in December 2024 there will also  be a vernissage in the renovated Hall 5 at the Museum of Humor and Satire.

The exposition includes over 250 works from the funds of the two cultural institutions, as well as from the private collections of Ivo Dimitrov and Dr. Rumen Manov.

One hundred and twenty-eight of the presented works are from the Museum collection – 87 satirical drawings, cartoons and watercolors and 41 paintings.

Stoyan Venev is an artist who created original work, with a distinct style and accessible expressive language. There is always a kind of subtle humor in his works. He paints with large strokes, big shapes and is distinguished by laconic composition. An “emblematic artist” – with a recognizable touch and theme, who embodies with an understanding and all-forgiving smile the life of the common man and his life transgressions, Bulgarian customs, motifs from Bulgarian folklore and native nature. Venev’s art permanently preserves its aesthetic significance, because the most important and original thing in it is deeply rooted in the spiritual being of the nation, in the characterological features of our national psychology – in the immutability of its artistic traditions.

Stoyan Venev was born in Skriniano village, Kyustendil municipality. He graduated from the Academy of Arts, majoring in Painting under Prof. Boris Mitov, Prof. Stefan Ivanov and Prof. Dimitar Gyuzhenov. His gift manifests with equal force in both painting and cartoons. He is a co-founding member of the Society of New Artists. Some of his works were based on anti-fascist ideas, for which he was brought to justice. He was a long-time editor of Sturshel.

Stoyan Venev held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in art exhibitions in the country and abroad. His works are owned by Bulgarian and foreign museums and galleries and are included in many private collections.

Summer in Humor is backSummer in Humor is back

Summer vacation is a time for games and entertainment, but only with us important topics such as ecology, culture and art are presented in the form of a game, with a sense of humor and in a language understandable to children. A major focus of this year’s all-day children’s program is the image of the cat in art.

The activities will trace the depiction of this fluffy pet and symbol of Gabrovo (no tail, of course) from the Stone Age, through antiquity, to the present day. Participants will have the opportunity to gain new knowledge, but also to practice their skills with an extremely diverse arsenal of techniques and tricks. The short lectures and practical assignments on art history will be led by Boryana Dyankova*.

Summer in Humor will take place over two consecutive weeks in July: 15th to 20th and 22nd to 26th, with activities starting between 08:00 and 09:00 in the morning and ending at 17:00 each day.

Intended for children between 7 and 11 years old. The organizers have prepared for the participants amazing experiences in the museum and the Park of Humor, filled with creative workshops and games aimed at acquiring new skills and knowledge.

The Museum team has many years of extensive experience in implementing educational programs for children. In this activity, we follow a special mission – through humor, we inspire and encourage children to experience joy, think critically, express themselves freely and build community.

The price for a child’s participation is BGN 120 for five days or BGN 24 per day. A second child in the family benefits from a 20% discount. The group consists of a maximum of 10 children, and the minimum number for the program is 6 children. It is recommended to participate in both weeks of Summer in Humor. To guarantee the place, the entry fee is paid up to two days after registration at the museum box office. We provide filtered water and fruit, and parents prepare food for their children according to their individual tastes.

The “Digitize This” ExhibitionThe “Digitize This” Exhibition

If the pretty Happiness Str., located between the Museum of Humor and Satire and the Yantra River in Gabrovo, is not on your way during the upcoming dynamic summer weeks, have a look at our newest exhibition online. We did upload it here as it is originally an exterior establishment but there is not a single spot of shade left outside!

The exhibition and the project of which it is a part are possible thanks to the National Culture Fund and the Program for Restoration and Development of State, Regional and Municipal Cultural Institutes, and brings together photos and lessons learned on the key topic of content digitization.

Enjoy!

Exhibition on Museum Content DigitalizationExhibition on Museum Content Digitalization

In the second half of the last century, museums, galleries and cultural communities entered into the exciting adventure of “heritage digitalization”. And, regardless of the specifics of the path that each individual institution takes, there are points of intersection, common problems and good solutions that connect us. Driven by our professional conviction of the importance and urgency of the process, we are all searching – through new studies, borrowing experience, adaptation, building partnerships, collaborations with the public and private sectors, and more.

Therefore, at the House of Humor and Satire, since the beginning of the new century, we have been challenging ourselves to learn more and faster about museum digitalization. Thanks to the project “Creation of space, plan and model for digitization of cultural values and archives”, financed by the National Culture Fund under the “Program for the restoration and development of state, regional and municipal cultural institutes”, we created better conditions for the implementation of our long-term goals in this direction, and it is an integral part of our mission to collect, preserve, study and celebrate what makes the world laugh.

We managed to refurbish and equip our digital workshop where photography/scanning and processing of exhibits and archives is done, and we visited two cultural institutions abroad – SALT Research in Istanbul and NOESIS in Thessaloniki to get inspired by the experience of organizations that started before us. We worked on the creation of a collection of good practices in the field of digitization of museum content and adaptation of museum activities to sustainable and green development, which we will build on in the years to come with new lessons learned.

And since we made sure to document what was happening in the project (so that we could narrate highlights of the experience through photographic works), the Museum of Humor and Satire now presents the outdoor exhibition “Digitalize This”.

The exhibition is on display on Shtastie Street, to the right of the Museum’s main entrance, until 10 August 2024.

Digitization of museum content makes cultural heritage more accessible to the worldDigitization of museum content makes cultural heritage more accessible to the world

The digitization of museum content is much more than the purchase of specialized software and the instructions for working with it. It is the process of research, exchanging experience, adapting and equipping spaces, human resources, building partnerships, collaborations with the public and private sector. All of which the Museum team underwent over the last year.

As a result of the creation of a space, plan and model for the digitization of museum content, the sustainability of the Museum in terms of storage and management of our archive and fund will be further developed. The professional development of the Museum team and their capacity are already increasing. Possibilities for popularizing the process of digitization of museum content and sharing experience and good practices on the subject with other museums in the country are yet to be realized. A successful attempt to involve certain groups (students) and society as a whole in the museum activity is the holding of the “Teen Curator” competition for students from the 8th to the 12th grade. In the first half of July 2024, there will also be an internship for students from the National Aprilov High School, who, assisting in the digitization process, will be included in the museum’s activities as a whole.

As the digitization progresses, additional opportunities will be revealed for more effective use of information about specific authors and works from the Museum’s collection. All this will be useful in the preparation of future projects, events, productions of the Museum, especially in terms of optimizing time and increasing work efficiency.

The project “Creation of space, plan and model for digitization of cultural values and archives” was implemented with the financial support of the National Culture Fund under the “Program for restoration and development of state, regional and municipal cultural institutes”.

Plant/Human Duo – a concert by Mirian Kolev at the Museum of HumorPlant/Human Duo – a concert by Mirian Kolev at the Museum of Humor

13 June 2024 from 18:00,
at the Giraffe Hall

Plant/Human Duo is a concert by Mirian Kolev in which he generates sounds from different plants. The project seeks the relationship between different plant vibrations and aesthetic sound results. Using devices and sensors attached to the leaves of plants, their biorhythms are converted into sound and further manipulated using real-time sound effects.

There is research in the field of bioacoustics that concerns the electrical signals flowing through plants and their conversion into sound waves. But the aim of this project is not only to convert these signals into sound, but to give a sonic aesthetic to all this generative organic electronic music and to show how humans and plants can interact and become parts of a common “orchestra”. This project also aims to show how technology can allow us to better understand our environment and communicate with it. In times of technological progress and deepening environmental crisis, it is very important to find a balance between technology and nature, and to integrate them into each other instead of opposing them.

Mirian Kolev is a musician and multidisciplinary artist living in Stara Planina and working in the field of experimental, electroacoustic, ambient, improvisational music and sound art. In the last 10 years he has performed around 300 events in nearly 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. He also works on collaborative projects with other musicians, visual artists, dancers, performance artists and composes music for art installations, videos and dance performances. His music is minimalist, atmospheric and discreetly psychedelic, and improvisation is an essential part of each of his live performances, turning it into an expressive soundtrack of time and space. His music is at times dark, at times meditative, at times cosmic, and melancholy is often present in it, as it is in the world around him.

“Digitalize This” with NOESIS: from Project Partnership to Friendship“Digitalize This” with NOESIS: from Project Partnership to Friendship

In implementation of the project “Creation of Space, Plan and Model for Digitizatаlization of Cultural Exhibits and Archive” of the Museum of Humor and Satire, Gabrovo, financed by the National Culture Fund under the Program for Restoration and Development of State, Regional and Municipal Cultural Institutes, three of our museum experts, together with the contracted creator of the planned artistic production, visited the cultural institution NOESIS in Thessaloniki, Greece in order to exchange experience on the subject of content digitization.

NOESIS is a science and technology center located in the Thermi area of Thessaloniki. The museum has been actively involved in the preservation of the Greek technological heritage for more than 20 years. Parallel to the technological exhibitions, NOESIS has various types of unique high-class facilities such as an impressive 360° dome planetarium, 3D simulation rooms and a cosmotheater for projecting films and educational programs on the largest screen in all of Greece, with the respectable 23 meters in length and 17 meters high.

Part of the project management team that participated in the visit from May 19, 2024 to May 23, 2024 included Bogdana Dencheva (Museum Pedagogue), Margarita Dorovska (Curator), Petyo Yordanov (Head of Tech Department), as well as Anton Ivanov (Graphic Designer and contractor for the creative activities within the project). The main part of the program took place on May 21st and 22nd, when the NOESIS specialists presented their organization, goals, team, equipment, approach and practice in planning and implementing the process of digitization of cultural exhibits, including the online platforms they work with, as well as the software and standards they use when digitizing archives.

Prior to their visit at NOESIS, on May 20, 2024, the MHS team visited 2 more specialized cultural institutions in Thessaloniki in order to observe other types of good practices: the Olympic Museum and the Museum of Cinema and its library, with which the foundations of a future partnership on the future of specialized books were also laid.

During their time at NOESIS, the MHS team had the opportunity to ask questions about the planning, organization, presentation and visitor awareness of all the current exhibitions, some of which on the themes of vintage cars, artificial intelligence, technologies in Ancient Greece. Part of the engaging expositions were the eco zoo without animals (yes, it’s possible!) as well as the 3D simulation of a rollercoaster up and down the Great Wall of China, which NOESIS offers to its visitors of all ages and which we, as guardians of laughter, whole-heartedly recommend to our fellow citizens traveling to Greece for their traditional summer vacation this year.

The MHS employees were accompanied and guided on the subject of digitization by the incredible hosts Mrs. Olympia Ralli, Expert “Recording and Documentation of Exhibits”, Mr. Kostas Tanis, Director “Exhibitions and Operations” and Mr. Evangelos Aftonidis, Director “Financial and Administrative Services”. The NOESIS team donated a Greek comic book to the MHS museum library, and the two teams started talks about a future joint exhibition with works from the MHS fund on the theme of new technologies.

We express gratitude to our NOESIS partners – for their time and invaluable advice. We will forever remember their smiles, hospitality, and their key role in inspiring new motivation and strength in the final phase of our project.

We cannot wait to welcome them in Gabrovo as soon as possible!

The Address of Satire Project ResultsThe Address of Satire Project Results

Deputy Director Nela Racheviz’s words on the project results and value

Thanks to the funding of the Program “Cultural Entrepreneurship, Heritage and Cooperation”, the Museum was able to complete an important stage of the process of its renovation and modernization. At the end of this project, among the most valuable gains for the Museum, I would point out the confidence that our team can develop and manage relatively large-scale projects – knowledge and skills that we will develop in the years to come.

The third floor of the museum was renovated, including the exhibition halls, the lobby, and the new library. Machinery, equipment, and furniture were delivered. We started working with software for managing and presenting the art collections and library software. Two exhibitions were created, one of them featuring a mobile application. We developed strategic guidelines for the development of the museum library and entrepreneurial ideas for cultural products and services. We developed a marketing plan, an educational program, and a navigation system to help visitors find their way around the museum.

An important upgrade of the capacity of the museum staff in the digitization of works of visual art has been carried out.

Under the guidance of our partner, the Norwegian University College for Green Development, we combined training with the practical application of new approaches in working with audiences. We have acquired knowledge and skills to support the artistic endeavors of disadvantaged communities and groups.

We are convinced of the significant “added value” of cooperation with various civic groups and will continue to spread the model supporting the connection of Bulgarian museums and galleries with new audiences, new ambassadors, and new topics and interpretations addressed to society. A process based on dialogue and shared creative effort that can make the professional work and achievements of museums more approachable and understandable to usually disinterested audiences, as well as give art critics access to better stories and different perspectives.

You can read the methodology here:

The “Address of Satire” project – creation of an exhibition from the fund of the “House of Humor and Satire” Museum – Gabrovo and an accompanying program on the role and limits of satire and its exhibition in renovated spaces in the Museum”.

The project is implemented under the Program “Cultural Entrepreneurship, Heritage and Cooperation”, financed by the FM of the EEA 2014-2021.
